End of the World or Start of a New Beginning?

There is a fair number of people who truly believe the world will end on December 21, 2012 but it is fair to say that most people are pretty skeptical. For those who believe the world is going to end they typically use the mayan calendar as their evidence that the world is going to end because the calendar has been so consistent at predicting events such as lunar and solar eclipses, sun rise and sunsets, and so on. Along with the Mayan calendar believers also use the predictions of Nostradamus and the bible as evidence that the world is going to end.

A picture of Nostradamus.Believers of Nostradamus' predictions believe that Nostradamus (born Michel de Nostradamus) predicted such things as the French Revolution, the atom bomb, the rise of Adolf Hitler, 9/11 and that he has predicted the end of the world on, you guessed it, December 21, 2012. It is not very clear how he came to "predict" these things but it is known that he definitely used passages from the bible and possibly ancient prophecies along with intense meditation. While the idea that Nostradamus may have predicted all these things about five centuries ago it is simply not logical. As skeptics say that 100% of Nostradamus' predictions are correct... After the events have already happened. His claims are broad and people are always looking for a way to fulfill them with events that take place. Overall Nostradamus is intriguing in a way but I believe fully that it is all a scam.

NASA has made many claims that there will be no apocolyptic end of the world in December 2012. At least not one that has to do with planets colliding or the earth’s rotational poles/magnetic field will reverse or anything like that. NASA has explained really well why exactly the earth is not going to end due to some huge disastrous event in this article. NASA says that earth has been fine for four billino years and that no credible scientist has found any logical reason to believe that they earth will end in 2012. They also explain why the Mayan Calendar ends on December 21, 2012 and why that means absolutely nothing significant. NASA says that the Mayan Calendar has periods and the Calendar that ends on December 21, 2012 is called the long count calendar. It is just like any paper calendar you might use on your wall. Although it ends on December 21 it will begin again on January 1 with a new calendar. When you think about it that way it seems like a joke almost that people are so freaked out by this end of the world stuff.

In the bible it says that only God knows when the world will end so many christians strongly disagree with the prediction of the end of the world because in their eyes only God should know the real answer. However, there are many christians that believe the world is going to end sometime soon just because modern day civilization and life has become so corrupt and is, in their eyes, in a downward spiral that will end with the second coming of Jesus Christ. I think many people can attest to the idea that civilization and society as we know it is in a somewhat scary situation right now. Financially the world is hurting. Environmentally the earth and it’s inhabitants are undoubtedly in for a big heap of trouble, it’s just a matter of time as to when those environmental problems will become really serious. When you look at these things with a pessimistic point of view it is easy to imagine that the world might come to an end as a result of our own corruption and destruction.

After researching 2012 I feel the same about it. I do not believe that the Mayan Calendar can predict when the world will end but I do feel that the world is in a scary situation right now in terms of money, war, poverty and environmental sustainability and that all of these things could really effect earth and its population negatively. If I knew for a fact that the world was ending in 2012 I would probably not be going to College and instead I would be traveling the world with my closest family and friends and having a grand old time right up until the last minute.
